Synthomer supplies high-performance raw materials designed to ensure rechargeable cells deliver high charge capacity, reliability and battery life. Anode binders hold together active cell material (graphite or silicon) and adhere it to the copper current collector. For performance and safety reasons these bonds must be maintained throughout a battery’s life.

Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) has become the most widely use lithium-ion anode binder due to its balance of versatility and electrochemical performance. Synthomer SBR binders have been engineered to meet the demanding needs of cell manufacturers. This ensures they are a drop-in to existing manufacturing processes, and deliver excellent battery performance.

Synthomer’s LITEX LBTM SBR binders are supplied as ready-to-use water-based latices that have excellent formulation compatibility with graphite and other anode actives. They offer excellent process stability ensuring that they are able to withstand anode mixing processes while minimising manufacturing losses.

LITEX LBTM binders have been optimised to provide maximum adhesion to active materials and to copper. This ensures they retain the bonds between active material and current collector over a lifetime of charge and discharge cycles, so that the battery retains its capacity for longer. Synthomer offers grades customised to maximise conductivity and performance at low temperatures.

Kristalex™ 3100 Hydrocarbon ResinUPR

Kristalex™ 3100 hydrocarbon resin is a water-white, highly color stable, nonpolar, low molecular weight thermoplastic polymer. This resin is compatible with a wide variety of oils, waxes, alkyds, plastics, and elastomers, and is soluble in many common organic solvents. It is indicated for use in plastics modification, adhesives, coatings, sealants, and caulks.

In EVA-based hot melt adhesives Kristalex™ 3100 has useful compatibility with EVA grades with up to 30% vinyl acetate and is useful in formulating low-color adhesives with good low temperature properties. In styrenic block copolymer based adhesives Kristalex™ 3100 preferentially associates with the styrenic endblocks, producing higher room-temperature cohesion without affecting tack and adhesion properties. adhesion properties.

It is designed primarily for use as a modifier resin in high performance adhesives and coating compositions. LITEX LB-420 is a styrene/butadiene copolymer latex for use as a binder in the anode of lithium-ion batteries. It offers excellent mechanical and electrochemical performance.  

LITEX™ LB-422XSBR

LITEX LB-422 is a styrene/butadiene copolymer latex used as a binder in the anode of lithium-ion batteries. It offers a good balance of properties and cold temperature processing.

Piccolastic™ D125 Hydrocarbon ResinUPR

Piccolastic™ D125 hydrocarbon resin is an high molecular weight, light colored, polar, thermoplastic hydrocarbon resin. Derived from pure styrene monomer, it exhibits to a limited degree, properties normally associated with higher polymeric resins - i.e., toughness and resiliency. Although it is hard and tough, it is readily workable, retains some wetting qualities, and provides excellent resistance to water, chemicals, shock, oil, and grease. It can be used as a modifier for rubber and plastic compounds used in shoe construction and as a binder for xerographic toners.

Piccolastic™ D125 is also useful to formulate glues used for solvent welding of styrenic plastics. In styrenic block copolymer-based systems Piccolastic™ D125 associates strongly with the styrene endblocks, reducing melt viscosity and cohesion without greatly affecting tack and adhesion properties. Piccolastic™ D125 is compatible with EVA grades with up to 20% vinyl acetate and will improve heat resistance and increase the melt viscosity of the system. Piccolastic™ D125 complies with many FDA regulations for applications involving direct contact with food. Compliance with a given regulation in a specific situation should be verified prior to use in a food contacting application.

Piccotex™ 75 Hydrocarbon ResinUPRPiccotex™ 75 hydrocarbon resin is the lowest softening point member of in a series of highly stable, water-white, thermoplastic materials based on purified aromatic monomers. These resins have outstanding hot tack; heat sealability; resistance to discoloration; acid, alkali, and moisture resistance; and stability to elevated temperatures encountered in compounding. High initial and retained gloss, and improved application speeds on curtain coating and roll coating equipment. Piccotex™ 75 complies with some FDA regulations for applications involving direct contact with food. Compliance with a given regulation in a specific situation should be verified prior to use in a food contacting application.
