Synthomer’s high-performance redispersible powders (RDPs) are featured in a dedicated technical article in the 2019 edition of the Drymix Mortar Yearbook. Published this spring during the International Drymix Mortar Conference in Nürnberg, the annual publication features selected technical articles for audiences in the drymix mortar industry and their supplying industries.
The article from Dr. Charles Bobichon centers on “High Performance Redispersible Powder for the Use in 1K Waterproofing Applications” and delineates the development of a new RDP based on styrene acrylate technology in combination with a new redispersing agent. Due to a continuing, global urbanisation, the need for high-performance waterproofing in construction is seeing a steady increase, with many customers favouring one-component systems for their ease of use. While vinyl acetate polymers are common in such RDPs, their weakness lies in the elongation performance. Elongation is a must in buildings that move, such as high rises buildings, and allows future cracks to be also covered by the waterproofing membrane.
This on-going development is based on a soft styrene-acrylate dispersion. First tests published in the 2019 Drymix Mortar Yearbook show promising results as it outshines a vinyl acetate market benchmark in elongation at -5°C; similarly, it has an edge the competitor in the waterproofing test according to DIN EN 14891. Thanks to a new redispersing agent, the particle size distribution after redispersions is very close to its precursor styrene acrylate – a critical achievement, as the redispersibility of the polymer powder is the most important parameter in order to achieve mortar performances like adhesion onto the substrate or abrasion resistance.
