ROHAGIT SD 15 is a thickening agent based on an aqueous dispersion of a thermoplastic methacrylic acid-acrylic ester copolymer. The dispersion is free from film forming aids, solvents and plasticizers.

ROHAGIT SD 15 is a uv stable, universal thickening agent for polymer dispersions and other aqueous systems with a pH value > 8. Preferably Rohagit SD 15 is used as thickening agent in non-pigmented systems like manufacturing coatings, nin-padding and printing compounds of the textile industry and in pigmented products like dispersion based paints, plasters and products for the construction chemistry. The salts of ROHAGIT SD 15 are anionic polyelectrolytes. The solutions are incompatible with cationic products. The viscosity of aqueous solutions depends on their solids content as well as on the type and quantity of base used for neutralization. Suitable alkalis are sodium or potassium hydroxide solution, triethanolamine or, preferably, 25 % ammonia solution. An excess of base and added electrolytes lower the viscosity. The consistency of this solution is glutinous, but not thready. It has a flow limit, i. e. it only starts to flow beyond a certain shear stress. Applications: ROHAGIT SD 15 can be used as thickening agent for aqueous media either as supplied (direct thickening) or as a 1 - 8 % aqueous alkaline solution (stock solution). 1. Direct thickening: Compounds of low viscosity, e.g. used in textile applications, following procedure is approved: The composition to be thickened is adjusted with alkali to a pH value of 8.5 - 10. After this ROHAGIT SD 15 diluted with up to the threefold quantity of water is added while stirring. Depending on the solids content or the desired viscosity, 1 - 5 % ROHAGIT SD 15 are required. The pH value of a thickened compound must exceed 8. Otherwise gel-like particles could be created, which can not be homogenized. Pigmented products of higher viscosity should be thickened as follows: ROHAGIT SD 15 is diluted with up to the threefold water quantity and added to the compound to be thickened while stirring. Depending on solids content, 1 to 5 % ROHAGIT SD 15 will be required. Subsequently, pH value is adjusted to 8.5 - 10. 2. Thickening with stock solution: ROHAGIT SD 15 is diluted with water, and pH value is adjusted with alkali to 8.5 to 10. Depending on the type of alkali used, stock solutions with up to 8 % solids can be prepared. Synthetic resin emulsions and compounds should have a pH value above 8.5 before the stock solution is added. For thickening of emulsion paints, for example, about 0.4 to 0.7 % ROHAGIT SD 15 solids (on emulsion) are required. For a longer storage time a biocide should be added to a stock solution.

Shipping and Storage

ROHAGIT SD 15 is supplied in road tankers or in non-returnable plastics drums secured by a lid with clamping ring or in non-returnable palletized bulk containers (net weight 1,000 kg). ROHAGIT SD 15 has to be stored protected from frost and, as far as possible, below 40 °C. Storage at temperatures between + 5 and + 30 °C is recommendable. ROHAGIT SD 15 contains a preservative to counter microbial attack during transportation. To protect it against germination during subsequent storage, absolutely stringent plant hygiene and, under certain circumstances, the addition of suitable preservatives will be necessary. Care must be taken to ensure that drums and storage containers are tightly closed. During processing, storage and transport of the product contact with metals unprotected against corrosion (likewise non-ferrous metals) has to be avoided. When stored correctly ROHAGIT SD 15 has a storage life of 12 months from date of delivery.
