LIPATON SB 5521 is a finely dispersed aqueous dispersion of a carboxylated styrene-butadiene copolymer. The dispersion contains an anionic emulsifier system and is free from film forming aids, solvents and plasticizers.

LIPATON SB 5521 is preserved against bacterial and fungal attack. In the manufacture of finished products, the material has to be retreated, as usual, with suitable biocides to give enhanced preservation.

Above minimum film forming temperature LIPATON SB 5521 forms a clear, slightly tacky film. LIPATON SB 5521 has a particularly low water absorption and water vapour permeability and is superbly suited for corrosion protection. Because of its elastic properties is used in particular for protection against stone chips. LIPATON SB 5521 can be used in various ways as a sole binder or in combination with anionically stabilised dispersions. As a result of its good compatibility with water thinnable resins, the dispersion can be mixed with these for special purposes. LIPATON SB 5521 has a proven practical worth, especially in the following products: primers, fillers, corrosion protection paints (air/forced drying), stone chip / underbody protection coatings. Coatings with LIPATON SB 5521 have very good adhesion to degreased, bright metals (iron, steel, zinc, aluminum), phosphated or lead-coated sheet steel and behave in a visco-elastic fashion over a wide temperature range. The recoatability with conventional and aqueous paint systems is good. Owing to the limited uv-stability of styrene/butadiene copolymers weatherability has to be tested where required. When preparing dispersion paints based on LIPATON SB 5521, pigments and fillers can be ground directly into all or part of the dispersion using conventional dispersion equipment, at which temperature should not exceed 50°C. There is compatibility with commonly used pigments, fillers and active corrosion protection pigments. For rheology adjustment inorganic thickeners, polyacrylates, polyurethanes, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone copolymers are suitable. Film properties such as elasticity and surface hardness can be altered by combination with harder / softer dispersions from our range (e.g. LIPATON SB 4520). Admixture of water thinnable resins (alkyd / epoxy ester resins, hydrosols, etc) can give advantages in preparation and application of paints and in film properties.

Shipping and Storage

LIPATON SB 5521 is supplied in road tankers or in non-returnable plastics drums secured by a lid with clamping ring or in non-returnable palletized bulk containers (net weight 1,000 kg). LIPATON SB 5521 has to be stored protected from frost and, as far as possible, below 40 °C. Storage at temperatures between + 5 and + 30 °C is recommendable. LIPATON SB 5521 contains a preservative to counter microbial attack during transportation. To protect it against germination during storage, absolutely stringent plant hygiene and, under certain circumstances, the addition of suitable preservatives will be necessary. Care must be taken to ensure that drums and storage containers are tightly closed. During processing, storage and transport of the product contact with metals unprotected against corrosion (likewise non ferrous metals) has to be avoided. When stored correctly LIPATON SB 5521 has a storage life of 12 months from date of delivery.
